ASL Resources for Families

When a person loses the ability to hear, it's natural to feel a range of emotions such as shock, anger, fear, and sadness. The world can become a frightening place without sound, and even communication with one's own family can seem difficult and frustrating. Some people may have a child who is born without hearing or who loses the ability to hear at an early age. For these parents, the emotions and fears are still real and powerful. Regardless, these situations should not be allowed to define one's life or how they are treated. Fortunately, deaf individuals can lead lives that are full and independent despite their not being able to hear. While technology has made it possible to function more easily than in the past, American Sign Language, or ASL, continues to be one of the most important methods of communication for people in the deaf community. Learning ASL is as crucial for the family members of deaf individuals as it is for deaf individuals themselves. Mastering this new language early will allow them to easily communicate with their loved ones and with others in the deaf community.

There are many ASL resources for families, and they are relatively simple to find. Associations such as the National Association of the Deaf are valuable resources for all things regarding deafness. Community colleges and universities, as well as churches and organizations or clubs for the deaf, often offer classes in ASL. One should also check resources that are available through the state in which they live, as there may be classes or services that are available to them. The Internet is another fountain of information and is highly beneficial for families in search of ASL resources.
